Since 1992, the DRA has set itself the task of organizing “humane and peaceful cooperation between Germany and Eastern Europe.” To achieve its goals, the organization conducts school exchanges, volunteer programs, as well as conferences and study trips. In Russia, DRA collaborated with civil society in the areas of social systems, education, democracy, human rights, journalism, NGO development, migration and integration. In addition, the organization provided economic support to environmental initiatives.

Deutsch-Russischer Austausch e.V. was designated as an “undesirable” organization, since according to the State Duma Commission, the organization supports justification of terrorist activities, nationalist and separatist sentiments, popularizes “non-traditional values” amongst the youth, discredits Russia's actions in the fight against coronavirus and misrepresents Russian history.
