The institute specializes in deep studies of humanitarian and social sciences. The initial mission of the institute was to establish a meeting space for scientists from Western Europe and independent scholars from Eastern Europe.
One of the research programs of the institute is dedicated to documenting the war in Ukraine. The institute holds lectures and discussions dedicated to international political issues.

"Since 2015, the so-called experts of IWM have been realizing the commercial program linked to the attempts to violate the territorial integrity of our country," the Prosecutor General's office says. "Curated by Western special services, manipulating with facts, they actively work on creating an image of Russia as an aggressor. In their publications, those fake researchers call to provide the neo-Nazis from Kyiv with weapons, support criminal attacks at peaceful civilians and stand for strengthening the military resistance in the zone of the special military operation."
The agency also noted that the institute cooperates with the Central European University in Vienna, and Open Society Foundation and Atlantic Council in the US. They all have been deemed undesirable in the territory of Russia.

Since 2015, this status can be assigned to foreign and international non-governmental organizations that, in the opinion of the Russian government, pose a threat to the foundations of the constitutional order of the Russian Federation, the defense capability of the country, or state security. Since 2021, this registry also includes those who cooperate with “undesirable organizations.”
