The “Institute of Modern Russia” (IMR) is an expert and analytical center whose purpose is to promote democratic values and the development of civil society in Russia, as well as to establish a dialogue between Russia and the United States. In addition, IMR actively fights for human rights and the rule of law.
Under the leadership of the institute, the online magazine “The Interpreter” worked: its authors translated the texts of the Russian-language media and blogs into English and published them in the magazine alongside the original texts. In January 2016, the magazine became part of Radio Liberty.

Reason for recognition
The prosecutor general's office indicates the formal reason for acclaiming "The institute of modern Russia" as an "undesirable" organization as being a "discredit of the results of the elections" and "initiation of protests". Under the version of the pro-government media, "anti-russian" actions of the institute consisted of preparation of reports on the war in Ukraine, as well as conferences, in which members of russian opposition were present, followed by drawing attention to violation of human rights and working on the development of potential reforms in post-Putin Russia.

Since 2015, this status can be assigned to foreign and international non-governmental organizations that, in the opinion of the Russian government, pose a threat to the foundations of the constitutional order of the Russian Federation, the defense capability of the country, or state security. Since 2021, this registry also includes those who cooperate with “undesirable organizations.”
