Singer Eduard Sharlot has been transferred to Settlement Colony No. 1 in Samara region, south-west Russia. This was reported by the project “Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial.”
In December 2024, the Samara Regional Court sentenced Sharlot to five and a half years in a settlement colony, on charges of insulting religious feelings (part 1 article 148 of the Criminal Code) and rehabilitation of Nazism (part 4 article 354.1 of the Criminal Code).
At the start of the proceedings, Sharlot faced charges under four articles, but during the final speeches the prosecutor dropped the accusations of destroying a passport (part 1 article 325 of the Criminal Code) and inciting hatred (point “a” part 2 article 282 of the Criminal Code), citing a lack of criminal conduct.
The article on insulting religious feelings was brought against Sharlot because of a video in which he nails his military ID, a photo of Patriarch Kirill and a crucifix made of branches to a tree. He was charged with rehabilitation of Nazism over videos where he tears apart a St George’s ribbon arranged in the shape of the letter Z, and reworks the song Victory Day, changing the lyrics and dedicating it to the decline of the rouble.
Sharlot recorded these videos after leaving Russia. He openly spoke out against the war in Ukraine, and his videos were devoted to this subject. In November 2023, the singer returned to Russia. He was immediately detained at Pulkovo airport. At first, he was arrested for 13 days under the administrative article on petty hooliganism (part 1 article 20.1 of the Code of Administrative Offences), and two days later it became known that a criminal case had been opened.
After being taken into custody, Sharlot recorded an apology video and wrote a letter to Patriarch Kirill, asking for forgiveness. Before sentencing, the singer said he “had been infected by an opposition point of view.”
