Ivan Petrov, a resident of Mari El, who was convicted under the charges of spreading military “fake news” (Part 1, Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code), has been transferred to a correctional centre at Penal Colony-Settlement No. 7 in the Republic of Mari El. This was reported by the Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial project.

On 24 December 2024, the Volzhsk City Court sentenced Petrov to two years of compulsory labour, with 10% of his earnings to be withheld for the state. Initially, he was sentenced to imprisonment for the same term, but the punishment was revised in light of mitigating circumstances. In February 2025, the sentence was upheld on appeal.

It is not known from what date he has been in custody.

The case against Petrov was initiated over comments on VKontakte, posted in November 2023 under a post about a memorial plaque dedicated to a Russian soldier who died during the invasion of Ukraine. According to the court press service, Petrov wrote about the inadmissibility of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as the actions of Russian military personnel in Mariupol, Bucha and Kyiv region.

The publication Volzhsk-24 reports that Petrov posted the comments from a “fake” account in one of the city groups on VKontakte.
