Fanur Khazhin, a defendant in the “Baymak case,” has been transferred to IK-29 colony in Perm. This was reported by Khazhin’s lawyer from OVD-Info, Denis Varlamov.
In December, Khazhin was sentenced to six years in a penal colony. Four other defendants in the “Baymak case” were given sentences of up to eight and a half years in a colony. In May, the court reduced Khazhin’s sentence to four years and two months in a penal colony.
All five men were found guilty of participating in mass riots (Part 2 of Article 212 of the Criminal Code) and using non-dangerous violence against police officers (Part 1 of Article 318 of the Criminal Code).
- In January 2024, Bashkir activist and former leader of the “Bashkort” movement Fail Alsynov was sentenced to four years in a penal colony over a speech delivered at a local gathering. Prior to and on the day of the verdict, three large rallies in support of Alsynov took place in Baymak (a city in Bashkortostan, the southern Urals) and Ufa (the capital of Bashkortostan).
- After these rallies, mass detentions began in the republic. Initially, these were on administrative grounds, and later criminal cases related to mass riots followed. More than 80 people have become defendants in this case. Some of them have reported ill-treatment by law enforcement officers. One of the defendants, Rifat Dautov, died after being detained—his family were not told the cause of his death. Another protest participant, Minniyar Baiguzkarov, took his own life. OVD-Info is defending 17 defendants in the case and raising donations for them.
