Zavur Abdullaev, sentenced to 12 years in prison as a defendant in the “Hizb ut-Tahrir” case, has told his wife that he has not received dental care in Prison No. 2 in Vladimir, a city in central Russia. The Crimean Tatar Resource Centre reported this, citing his wife, Emine Abdullaeva.

According to her, he only has 12 teeth left.

“All the others have either crumbled away, or, when they started to hurt, he had them taken out. Of course, they don’t provide dental care there. If you have a toothache, they send you to the dentist, who only offers extraction,” Abdullaeva said.

The Crimean Tatar man’s chronic health conditions have also worsened—specifically, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. According to Emine Abdullaeva, her husband takes tablets for his diabetes.

“When he takes them, everything is fine, […] his blood sugar stays within normal limits. Some sort of new growth has appeared on his leg—we don’t know what to do about that,” she said.

She added that while her husband is not under physical pressure, imprisonment is “morally oppressive” for him psychologically.

Abdullaeva also spoke about difficulties with correspondence, as letters from her husband “arrive very rarely.”

Zavur Abdullaev had previously reported health issues in August last year. It became known at that time that he had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and hypertension. He required an endocrinologist examination and some laboratory tests. He also said he was not receiving letters in prison.

  • On 17 August 2021, law enforcement conducted mass searches in the homes of Crimean Tatars, during which five people were detained—Rustem Murasov, Rustem Tairov, Dzhebar Bekirov, Zavur Abdullaev, and Raif Fevziev. All were sent to pre-trial detention. Fevziev’s case was considered separately.
  • In January 2023, Fevziev was sentenced to 17 years in a strict-regime penal colony. At the end of May, the Southern District Military Court handed down sentences for the others: Bekirov received 17 years for organising a terrorist group (part 1, article 205.5 of the Criminal Code) and preparing to seize power (article 278 with the use of part 1, article 30), while Abdullaev, Murasov and Tairov were sentenced to 12 years for participation in a terrorist group (part 2, article 205.5) and preparing to seize power.
  • In March 2024, following an appeal, Zavur Abdullaev was transferred to the prison in Vladimir.
