In St Petersburg, a criminal case has been opened against a 23-year-old man who, while out walking with his girlfriend, declared his love for her on information stands dedicated to Victory Day—the young man spray-painted the words “I love you” in black. This was reported by Fontanka.

The inscription was found on stands on Malaya Konyushennaya Street on 1 July, and today it became known that police, using CCTV footage, had identified and detained the person suspected of writing it, as well as his companion. The detainee said he wrote the phrase under the influence of alcohol.

RIA Novosti, citing a law enforcement source, reported that the case has been opened under the article on the rehabilitation of Nazism (Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code)—most likely the section that punishes desecration of symbols of military glory (part 3 of Article 354.1).

16:01 Another criminal case for vandalism (part 1 of Article 214 of the Criminal Code) has also been brought against the detained St Petersburg resident. This was reported by the Investigative Committee’s St Petersburg press service.

Investigators also confirmed the third part of the article on rehabilitation of Nazism. They noted that the detainee is a resident of Volgograd Region, in southern Russia. A pre-trial restriction measure is to be decided for him.

18:02 The name of the detainee has been revealed—he is Artem Bronin. This was reported by Rotonda.

The publication notes that Bronin’s 21-year-old girlfriend Lada, to whom he confessed his love, is listed in the criminal case as a witness.

The young man’s pre-trial restriction measure has already been decided—he has been released on a pledge not to leave the city.
