Sergei Abramov, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, has been fined 150,000 roubles (approximately US$1,700) over alleged donations to the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK). This was reported by RusNews.
The Pereslavl District Court in Yaroslavl region found the scientist guilty under the article on financing extremist activities (Part 1, Article 282.3 of the Russian Criminal Code). The prosecutor had requested a fine of 450,000 roubles (about US$5,100) for Abramov.
The charges stated that Abramov transferred 7,000 roubles (about US$80) to the FBK account. In an interview with Kommersant, the scientist said that he did not agree with the charges against him and “has valid reasons” for this. Later, according to “MK,” Abramov made another statement: the money was sent to FBK without his knowledge or consent.
The scientist was placed under house arrest in April 2023. This preventive measure was extended twice, but after 10 October the investigators did not request a further extension. Abramov was released.
In November 2023, he was sent for a psychiatric evaluation in a mental health facility. According to Abramov, he spent 12 days there. The examination found him mentally competent.
In February 2024, Abramov told TASS that he remained under a travel restriction order.
- Until the end of March 2022, Abramov headed the Institute for Program Systems (IPS), located in the village of Veskovo, within the urban district of Pereslavl-Zalessky in the Yaroslavl region (a city northeast of Moscow). According to the latest information, he continues to work there as the director of the Research Centre for Multiprocessor Systems.
- The scientist also participated in the Russia-Belarus programme to develop SKIF supercomputers, for which he received a government prize for science and technology in 2006.
