In Nizhny Novgorod, a city east of Moscow, a criminal case has been opened against activist Tatyana Arshinova under the law on organising the activities of an extremist organisation (Article 282.2 of the Criminal Code). This was reported on the Nizhny Novgorod Political Red Cross (“NPKK”) channel.
According to information from the channel, Arshinova was detained today at 11 am, and investigative actions—likely a search—were carried out at her home.
Tatyana Arshinova is currently being held in a temporary detention centre; tomorrow a court will decide on her remand. The exact reason for the case is not yet known.
In 2018, she was found guilty of violating public assembly procedure (part 5 of Article 20.2 of the Administrative Offences Code) for holding single-person pickets in support of film director Oleg Sentsov. Arshinova was sentenced to 40 hours of compulsory labour.
She was also charged over participating in a Nemtsov memorial march. Police accused the activist of violating rules for holding an event (part 1 of Article 20.2 of the Administrative Offences Code).
On 23 January 2021, Tatyana Arshinova was detained at a rally in support of Navalny. Later, a court fined her 25,000 rubles (approx. US$270) under the law on organising an unauthorised protest (part 2 of Article 20.2 of the Administrative Offences Code).
A week later, her home was searched in connection with an investigation into violating sanitary and epidemiological restrictions (part 1 of Article 236 of the Criminal Code) related to the protest. Arshinova was a witness in the case. Police seized equipment, bank cards, flyers and documents belonging to her and her mother.
In the same year, 2021, she also staged a solo picket against the law on “foreign agents” and “undesirable organisations.” Immediately after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, she was detained for staging an anti-war protest, for which she was later fined 150,000 rubles (approx. US$1,620) for repeated violation of protest rules (part 8 of Article 20.2 of the Administrative Offences Code).
18 July According to the Nizhny Novgorod Political Red Cross, on 17 July, Tatyana Arshinova was sent to a pre-trial detention facility. NPKK notes that she has diabetes.
