Izzet Abdullaev, sentenced to 12 years in prison as a defendant in the second Simferopol Hizb ut-Tahrir case, has reported a decline in his health while in Penal Colony No. 2 in Salavat (Republic of Bashkortostan, a region in the Urals). This was reported by “Crimean Solidarity” citing his wife, Guzel Abdullaeva.

According to her, her husband is suffering from toothache and hypertension that has developed against the background of arrhythmia. She says the medical assistance provided at the penitentiary is “superficial.”

“They might give tablets, but in most cases, it is [the detainees’] family members who send medicines,” said Guzel Abdullaeva.

  • Abdullaev and other defendants in the second Simferopol Hizb ut-Tahrir case—Vladlen Abdulkadyrov, Tofik Abdulgaziev, Mezhit Abdurakhmanov, and Bilyal Adilov—were sentenced in May 2022. They were found guilty of participation in the activities of a terrorist organisation (Part 2, Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code) and preparing for a violent change of power (Article 278 of the Criminal Code using Part 1 of Article 30). Adilov received 14 years’ imprisonment and the rest—12 years each. All sentences included the first five years in prison, with the remainder to be served in a strict regime colony. In July 2023, Abdullaev was transferred to a prison in Ulyanovsk Region (central Russia).
  • The defendants in this case were detained in March 2019 after raids that activists from “Crimean Solidarity” have described as the largest since the occupation of the region began.
