Rostislav Murzagulov, former chair of the Public Chamber of Bashkortostan and deputy head of the republic, who was convicted in a case about wartime “fake news,” has been added to Rosfinmonitoring’s list of “terrorists and extremists.” This was reported by RIA Novosti.
It is likely that a new case has been opened against him. Murzagulov’s name was marked with an asterisk—this is how the list denotes people who are defendants in criminal cases under terrorism-related articles. There had not previously been any reports of such a case involving Murzagulov.
In July, the former official was sentenced in absentia to eight years in a general regime penal colony for spreading “fake news” about the Russian army (paragraph “d” of part 2, article 207.3 of the Criminal Code), and for failing to comply with “foreign agent” obligations (part 2, article 330.1 of the Criminal Code).
This case was launched over a video about the actions of the Russian army and publishing materials without the required “foreign agent” disclaimer.
In December 2022, the Ministry of Justice included Murzagulov in the “foreign agents” registry. Shortly before that, he himself had filed a lawsuit against the Ministry of Justice for inaction, seeking to have himself recognised as a “foreign agent.” After being added to this list, Murzagulov was fined several times under protocols for violations of the “foreign agent” legislation.
In the spring of 2025, the former official announced he had applied to join the “Freedom of Russia” legion.
- In 2010–2011, Murzagulov served as deputy head of the Presidential Administration of Bashkortostan. In December 2020, he became chair of the republic’s Public Chamber, but left the post in 2021. After the start of the war in Ukraine, Murzagulov left Russia and began working on projects with Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
