The prosecutor has requested an eight-year prison sentence for 73-year-old St Petersburg resident Nina Akimova in a case concerning incitement to terrorism (part 2, article 205.2 of the Russian Criminal Code) over two comments, reports Mediazona.

When asked whether she could pay a potential fine, Akimova replied that her monthly income is 35,000 roubles (about US$380) and she has no savings. Her lawyer promised that close relatives would pay any fine, just as they did with the administrative fine she received in February this year.

According to investigators, in February the elderly woman posted two comments under a VKontakte post about detentions at rallies in Moscow, calling to “crush the Kremlin-Jewish gang” and to “strangle them like rats.”

The case was initiated following a complaint from Akimova’s former supervisor at the Military Institute of Physical Culture. According to Akimova, she had conflicts with the institute’s management, filed complaints to the prosecutor’s office, and as a result, violations were discovered at the institute.

In court, Akimova admitted to posting the comments but explained that she specifically meant Anatoly Chubais and Roman Abramovich, and understood the word “crush” to mean “oppose.”

She had previously been fined in an administrative case. Currently, no preventive measure has been imposed; she attends court hearings of her own accord.

15:00 The 1st Western District Military Court in St Petersburg fined Nina Akimova 400,000 roubles (about US$4,350) in the case of incitement to terrorism on social media (part 2, article 205.2 of the Russian Criminal Code), reports Mediazona.

The court also granted Akimova a five-year instalment plan for paying the fine.
