The Avtozavodsky District Court of Tolyatti has sentenced Umutbai Davletberdin, who was involved in the case of a snowball thrown during a rally in Baymak, to three years and seven months in a penal colony. This was reported by the convicted person’s lawyer.
Davletberdin was charged under two articles: participation in mass riots (Article 212 of the Criminal Code) and using violence against a representative of authority (Part 1, Article 318 of the Criminal Code). The investigation considered the act of a snowball hitting a riot police officer’s helmet as violence.
Four other defendants in the “Baymak case” also received sentences, ranging from three and a half to three years and eight months in a penal colony.
- Davletberdin has been held in a pre-trial detention centre for more than a year and a half. Umutbai was not allowed to receive letters and was also registered as someone allegedly prone to attacking penal colony staff.
- OVD-Info has reported in detail on what is happening to the defendants in the “Baymak case” and how the criminal prosecution has affected their families.
