The activist is being held in Correctional Colony No. 3 in Kostroma, a city in western Russia.

“I am often in the punishment isolation cell. I’ve been given another 15 days, so I’ll be in the punishment cell until the 31st of October. I’ve spent the whole of October in the punishment cell, I don’t know what to do anymore. I don’t know where to put myself,” she wrote to an OVD-Info reader on 18 October.

  • A year ago, Gashimova was sentenced to four and a half years in a penal colony on charges of inciting terrorism (Article 205.2 Part 2 of the Russian Criminal Code) and extremism (Article 280 Part 2 of the Russian Criminal Code). The reason for the prosecution were anti-war comments posted in the Telegram channels “Belgorod Podonnya” and “Citizens of Free Kumukia.”
  • The activist was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport in May 2023, when she was about to fly to Belgrade. After a series of “carousel arrests” on administrative charges, she was given criminal charges and the court remanded her in a pre-trial detention centre.
