The Industrial District Court of Izhevsk has sentenced Munir Isyangildin to four years and two months in a general-regime penal colony over the case concerning a public gathering in Baymak, a city in Bashkortostan. This was reported by his OVD-Info lawyer, Maksim Kuznetsov.

Three other defendants in the same case received identical sentences today, while a fifth person was sentenced to four and a half years of general regime. All of them were found guilty of participating in mass unrest (Part 2, Article 212 of the Criminal Code) and using non-life-threatening violence against a law enforcement officer (Part 1, Article 318 of the Criminal Code).

Isyangildin was sent to a pre-trial detention centre by the Kirovsky District Court of Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan; at that time, he was charged only with the article on mass unrest. During the investigation, an additional charge under the second article was added: according to investigators, Isyangildin threw snow at a police officer, hitting their right arm.

  • In January 2024, Bashkir activist and former leader of the Bashkort movement Fail Alsynov was sentenced to four years in a penal colony for a speech at a public gathering. Prior to and on the day of sentencing, three large rallies were held in support of Alsynov: on 15 and 17 January in Baymak and on 19 January in Ufa.
  • After these rallies, mass detentions began. Initially, these were administrative cases, but later law enforcement launched a criminal case on mass unrest. More than 80 people have become defendants in the case. Some reported being subjected to violence. One defendant, Rifat Dautov, died after being detained—his family was not given a cause of death. Another participant, Minniyar Bayguzkarov, took their own life. OVD-Info is providing legal defence for 20 of the defendants in this case and is raising donations for them.
