Today, the lawyer left Pretrial Detention Centre No. 1 in Vladimir, reports the organisation “First Department.”
In January 2025, Sergunin was sentenced to three and a half years in a general regime penal colony. He was found guilty of participating in an extremist community (part 2, article 282.1 of the Criminal Code) because he provided legal services to the politician Alexei Navalny while the latter was held in Correctional Colony No. 2 in Pokrov, a small city to the east of Moscow. Unlike the other defendants in the case, Sergunin admitted guilt.
The lawyer had been in custody since October 2023.
- Two other defendants remain in the penal colonies—lawyers Vadim Kobzev and Alexey Liptser, who also represented Navalny at different times. Kobzev was sentenced to five and a half years in a colony, and Liptser to five years. They were found guilty under the same article.
- Security forces claimed that the lawyers used their status to gain access to the colony where the politician was held, in order to pass information “between the leaders, members of the extremist community, and Navalny.”
