37-year-old historian Oleg Novoselov has been placed in custody on charges of facilitating terrorist activity (Article 205.1 of the Criminal Code). This was reported by 66.ru, citing the press service of the Verkh-Isetsky District Court of Yekaterinburg.
Novoselov’s name appeared on the Rosfinmonitoring “terrorists and extremists” list on 28 April. The historian’s Telegram channel, “Repressions in Sverdlovsk”, has not been updated since 20 April.
The reason for the criminal case is unknown.
- Novoselov researched Stalin-era repressions in the Urals. Since 2018, he had been studying documents in the State Archive of Administrative Bodies of Sverdlovsk region. He started his work as a volunteer with Yekaterinburg’s “Memorial” group. In autumn 2025, Novoselov was the first to report that the archive was starting to restrict access to files on rehabilitated victims of political repression.
