In Yekaterinburg, a major city in the Urals, a researcher of Stalinist repressions has been arrested on charges of aiding terrorism.

37-year-old historian Oleg Novoselov has been remanded in custody under charges of aiding terrorist activity (Article 205.1 of the Criminal Code). This was reported by 66.ru, citing the press service of the Verkh-Isetsky District Court in Yekaterinburg.

Novoselov’s name appeared on Rosfinmonitoring’s list of “terrorists and extremists” on 28 April. The historian’s Telegram channel “Repressions in Sverdlovsk” has not been updated since 20 April.

The reason for the criminal case is unknown.

• Novoselov researched Stalin-era repressions in the Urals. Since 2018, he has been studying documents in the State Archive of Administrative Bodies of Sverdlovsk Region. He began his work as a volunteer for “Memorial.” In autumn 2025, Novoselov was the first to report that the archive was starting to restrict access to the files of rehabilitated victims of political repression.

The news has been amended to correct the mistaken claim that Novoselov was a volunteer with Yekaterinburg’s “Memorial.”
