The political analyst Aleksandr Kynev has ended up in the hospital inside Matrosskaya Tishina pre-trial detention centre with two fractures of the shinbone following his detention. This was reported by the project “Word to the Defence,” citing a source at the No. 77 FSIN medical unit.
According to the project’s source, Kynev sustained his injuries as a result of torture during his detention. The political analyst’s leg has been put in a cast, and his condition is described as moderate.
Kynev was detained with the involvement of FSB officers. On 25 September, the Perovsky District Court in Moscow ordered him to be held for two months in pre-trial detention, reported Mediazona. The political analyst has been charged with attempted large-scale drug trafficking (section “g,” part 4, article 228.1 of the Criminal Code), which carries a sentence of 10 to 20 years’ imprisonment. Kynev denies the charges. His defence team has already appealed against the arrest.
Aleksandr Kynev is a political analyst and an expert on Russian elections and regional politics. For many years, he has analysed electoral campaigns and violations during elections. In February 2026, the Ministry of Justice added him to the register of “foreign agents.”
Shortly before his detention, Kynev was analysing the recent State Duma elections and writing about possible falsifications and other violations. The website Verstka, citing sources close to the presidential administration, reported that the political analyst’s arrest came as a surprise to the Kremlin’s internal policy bloc. One of their sources suggested that Kynev’s persecution may be connected to his unofficial cooperation with the New People party.
