The Supreme Court of Chuvashia has lifted the ban on holding rallies near shopping centres, markets and residential buildings. This was achieved by Alexander Andreyev, a deputy of the republic’s State Council from the Communist Party (KPRF), reports “7×7,” citing the court’s decision.
In Chuvashia, rallies had been banned near shopping centres and markets, schools and universities, sports facilities, and residential buildings. Andreyev considered these restrictions too broad and decided to challenge them.
First, the deputy approached the prosecutor’s office. They agreed that the regional law needed to be amended and demanded that the State Council remedy the violations. However, the parliament did not do this, after which Andreyev went to court.
The claim began to be considered in the summer. In August, the court postponed the hearing until the end of September. At the time, Andreyev suggested the case was postponed so as “not to spoil the respondent’s mood before the elections,” referring to the State Council.
On 25 September, the court sided with the deputy but lifted only part of the ban. The remaining restrictions are still in force, particularly those on gatherings near educational and sports institutions.
