Political analyst Alexander Kynev has announced a hunger strike in Moscow pretrial detention centre (SIZO)-4 “Medved.” This was reported by lawyer Mikhail Biryukov, writes “Slovo Zashchite” (“A Word In Defence”).
According to the lawyer, Kynev was transferred to a cell for 34 people that is currently holding 35 detainees. Instead of a toilet, there is a hole in the floor. Because of a cast on his leg, broken in two places, the political analyst cannot use it, and so at the weekend he stopped eating. Lawyers are seeking for Kynev to be transferred to conditions that meet his state of health.
- Kynev was detained on 25 September and sent to a pretrial detention centre on charges of attempted large-scale drug dealing (clause “g” part 4 article 228.1 of the Criminal Code). The political analyst does not admit guilt. After his arrest, Kynev was diagnosed with two fractures of the tibia. “Slovo Zashchite” reported that the injuries could be the result of torture. A cast was set, and for a time he was held in the hospital at SIZO “Matrosskaya Tishina.”
- On 16 October, Kynev was transferred to SIZO-4 “Medved.” Later, he wrote in a letter to journalist Gleb Yarovoy that he could not move independently as he had not been provided with crutches.
- On 22 October, the Moscow City Court kept Kynev in custody. It was later reported that the Moscow Federal Penitentiary Service office did not find confirmation of his rights having been violated, nor of torture or degrading treatment.
