He was detained on 4 February 2015 together with 30 other suspects for participation in the activities of the Islamist party Hizb ut-Tahrir, unrelated to terrorism.
He was arrested on charges of participation in the activities of a terrorist organisation; in January 2016, a charge of preparation for the violent seizure of power was added. On 16 December 2017, he was transferred to a prison hospital due to a blood clot in his leg. After that, the judge separated his case into separate proceedings. On 30 July 2018, Akhmetshin was sentenced together with the other 20 defendants: the court sentenced him
