An independent Russian publication that has been published since April 1993. From 1995 to 2023, Dmitry Muratov, laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021, served as editor-in-chief; since November 2023, the publication has been headed by Sergey Sokolov, with Muratov remaining as publisher. In March 2022, the newspaper suspended publication; in September 2022, the Basmanny Court revoked its media license; the publication continues to operate online.
Disseminated false information about decisions made and policies pursued by public authorities of the Russian Federation, as well as about the electoral system of the Russian Federation. Opposed the special military operation in Ukraine. Participated in the dissemination of messages and materials of foreign agents to an unlimited circle of persons. Cooperates with foreign agents.
