Former officer of the Ukrainian army. After the seizure of Crimea in 2014, he joined the Russian Armed Forces, in connection with which he was charged with high treason in Ukraine. In Russia, a similar charge was brought against him; he was detained on 29 September 2017. In 2016, a lawsuit was filed against Dolgopolov for damages caused to the Russian Ministry of Defence. However, the suit was returned due to irregularities. Dmitry Dolgopolov was held in a pre-trial detention centre in Moscow.
