He was detained on 29 March 2023 in Yekaterinburg, where he was working on a material about the public attitude to the PMC "Wagner", after which he was taken to Moscow, where he was taken into custody. On 19 July, Gershkovich was sentenced to 16 years in a strict regime colony. On 1 August 2024, Gershkovich was released as part of a prisoner exchange between Russia and the United States.
