Evgenii Zateev

Coordinator of the Vesna anti-war movement. He was detained in St. Petersburg on May 7, 2022, following searches and brought to Moscow. On May 10, the court imposed a preventive measure in the form of a ban on certain actions in connection with his involvement in the Vesna movement, charging him with participating in NGO activities that infringe on citizens' rights. In May 2023, Zateev's charges were reclassified from participation in NGO activities to creation of such an organization. On June 6, 2023, Zateev was again detained in St. Petersburg following a search and brought to Moscow. There, he was charged with creating an extremist group and disseminating disrespectful information about military glory days by a group of individuals. He was taken into custody on June 8. In October 2023, Zateev was fined 30,000 rubles for failing to label his publications as "foreign agents" (Part 4, Article 19.34 of the Code of Administrative Offenses). According to Roskomnadzor, Zateev published posts on the Telegram channel of the "Vesna" movement, which has been designated as a "foreign agent," without the appropriate label. The criminal cases were consolidated. Zateev initially confessed, but on October 16, 2024, he retracted his confession. He claimed that he had not testified against other defendants in the cases, but had betrayed his ideals, including by calling the anti-war movement "an anti-Russian policy financed and controlled by political forces from Ukraine."
