Detained by the FSB on 22 January 2015, on the same day his flat was searched, he was charged with calls to extremism, after which he was released on his own recognizance; he is accused of publishing under the pseudonym "Ingvar Stefan" a social media post on the topic of the war in Ukraine, as well as a comment by another user, which the investigation mistook for a repost. On 16 May, he was sentenced to two years in a penal colony.

In November 2016, Stenin's sentence was toughened and he was transferred to a penal colony.

On 2 June 2017, Stenin was released after the verdict was cancelled and the case was dismissed for lack of corpus delicti.

On 9 November, the Supreme Court, having considered the complaint of the Prosecutor General's Office, returned Stenin's case to the appeal instance. On 21 December, the verdict was again declared lawful.

On 17 February 2018, it became known that Stenin left Russia.

On 21 October 2015, Stenin was fined one thousand rubles for posting a video clip "Orange Sun 14/88" in the social network "VKontakte" in 2012
