Detained on 27 July 2019 during the dispersal of the rally for fair elections and left for two nights in the police station. On 29 July, he was sent to administrative arrest for 10 days. On 1 August Podkopaev was taken from the special reception centre for questioning by the Investigative Committee and charged with participation in mass riots. The next day the court sent him to custody. On 21 August Podkopaev was charged with the use of violence against representatives of the authorities, not dangerous to life and health. Podkopaev pleaded guilty and agreed to a special trial.

On 3 September the court sentenced Podkopaev to three years in a general regime colony. On 9 October, the court of appeal reduced the term by one year. On 18 December 2020, he was released on parole.
