Jana Helmel

A resident of Yekaterinburg, the human rights defender worked for the Foundation "In Defence of Prisoners' Rights" and Yekaterinburg-based human rights organisations - the association "Legal Basis," ANO "Independence and Law" and the "Interregional Centre for Human Rights." She specialised in protecting prisoners' rights, regularly visiting Sverdlovsk pre-trial detention centres and colonies together with human rights activist Alexei Sokolov and members of the Sverdlovsk ONC. In November 2024, it became known that a criminal case was opened against Helmel and she was put on the wanted list. The details of the case are unknown.
