Journalist, left Russia. Founder and editor-in-chief of the publication Project, a media outlet that specialised in complex investigations, stories, portraits and open data research. Editor-in-chief of the news publication "Agency". In different years he headed the website of Forbes Russia as editor-in-chief, the RBC news agency and the Dozhd TV channel as editor-in-chief. From 2001 to 2011, he worked as deputy editor-in-chief of Gazeta.ru. Since autumn 2013, he has been Executive Director of the Internet Project Service at Interfax Agency. He worked at the International Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Science Research (Gorbachev Foundation) and was engaged in research activities.

In July 2021, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office declared the legal entity of the publication Project an "undesirable organisation", and Roman Badanin was included in the register of "foreign agents" among other journalists of the publication.
In February 2026, Badanin was put on the wanted list in a case of evasion of his duties as a "foreign agent".
