Yakushev was detained in connection with a peaceful action carried out by Greenpeace activists in September 2013. The activists had travelled on the Arctic Sunrise ship to the Prirazlomnaya oil platform in the Pechora Sea to protest against the development of oil and gas fields on the Arctic shelf. The ship was forcibly stopped, and all those on board were detained. Initially Yakushev was charged with piracy, but the charge was later reclassified to hooliganism. He had been detained since September 2013 but was released on bail in November 2013. In December 2013, he was granted amnesty.
