On 1 June 2023, law enforcers came to the flat in Zhirnovsk (Volgograd Region) where Romanov was staying. The search was conducted on the basis of an investigator's order, without a court decision. The door was broken in, and the landlady was kept in the entryway for about an hour. When she got into the flat, she saw Romanov handcuffed on the floor. Electronic devices, personal records and a large sum of money were seized from the woman. All of Romanov's personal belongings were confiscated and he was taken to a neighbouring town for questioning.

The next day Romanov was placed in a temporary detention centre, the following day he was charged and threatened with ten years' of imprisonment. On 4 June, he was sent to custody. In July 2023, Romanov was transferred to Anadyr. On 1 February 2024, he was released under recognisance not to leave the country.
