On October 2, 2017, he was detained after a search and accused of involvement in an extremist organisation. On October 3, he was placed under house arrest. In September 2018, the court returned the case to the prosecutor's office, but in November it was again brought to court. On January 22, 2019, Mustafayev was sentenced to two and a half years suspended sentence.
