In St Petersburg, security forces have detained 51-year-old doctor Yegor Voshchinin from the Petrov Oncology Centre on charges of inciting terrorism, reports Rotonda.

Voshchinin’s ex-wife told the publication that investigators from the Investigative Committee detained him in the morning on 2 July. Yesterday afternoon, the St Petersburg office of the Investigative Committee announced the detention of a man on charges of inciting terrorism online (part 2, article 205.2 of the Criminal Code).

The Investigative Committee specified that the criminal case was initiated due to comments left in one of the messengers in October 2023 and December 2024.

Rotonda writes that the prosecution was launched over several comments in pro-Ukrainian Telegram chats, in which Voshchinin allegedly called for violence against the Russian leadership. After his arrest, he admitted guilt.

According to the Investigative Committee, the doctor was detained with the participation of officers from the FSB Border Guard Directorate for St Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, with armed support from SOBR fighters.

17:14 The Vyborg District Court has placed Voshchinin in pre-trial detention, reports the unified press service of the St Petersburg courts.

The doctor himself requested to be placed under house arrest.

The press service clarified that Voshchinin is accused of inciting terrorism due to public Telegram posts made on 20 and 23 October 2023:

‘According to the expert’s conclusion, [the messages] contain a combination of linguistic and psychological features indicating calls for the execution of Russian Federation political figures by hanging.’

The same features were found in Voshchinin’s comments to Telegram chat posts published on 7 and 13 December 2024. In total, the doctor is charged in two episodes of incitement to terrorism.
