The Islamist party Hizb ut-Tahrir has been designated a terrorist organisation in Russia. Its members are accused and given actual prison sentences solely for meeting in flats, reading religious literature and allegedly recruiting new members. According to the Information and Analytical Centre Sova and the Human Rights Centre Memorial, the party has been wrongly classified as terrorist in Russia.
According to data from the project “Support for Political Prisoners: Memorial” as of 15 October 2023, at least 335 people have been persecuted in connection with their involvement in Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami. Russian courts have convicted at least 271 people of involvement in the party’s activities, 115 of whom have been sentenced to more than fifteen years in prison. In total, Memorial has recognised 289 defendants in Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami-related cases as political prisoners (238 of whom are currently under prosecution, and 50 have been released after serving their sentences).
